Calcined Petroleum Coke is derived from the process of calcining green petroleum coke (GPC), a by-product of oil refining. The process involves heating GPC at high temperatures, up to 1200 to 1350°C, to remove moisture, volatile matter, and impurities. Calcination can reduce the content of impurities such as sulfur and ash. For example, low-sulfur calcined coke (sulfur content ≤0.5%) is suitable for prebaked anodes for aluminum electrolysis, while medium-sulfur coke (sulfur content 0.5%-2%) is primarily used in the aluminum smelting industry.
Reduced Volatiles
The volatile content in green coke (approximately 11%) is significantly reduced to ≤0.6% after calcination, preventing cracking in finished products caused by volatile escape during calcination.
Calcined petroleum coke manufacturing process
Firstly, dry green petroleum coke by heating in a controlled manner. The purpose of this step is to prevent steam formation in the kiln. Calcination is done by drying, so that is not a problem later on when driving. Controlling moisture in the final product can improve the stability and structural strength of the final product.
Next, volatile hydrocarbons are removed from the dried coke by heating the latter up at rising temperatures. The fixing of carbon and removal of impurities are very critical phase. Improvement of electrical conductivity and mechanical strength results from devolatilization. This directly impacts the CPC quality and industrial performance.
Then, you bring the coke particles into densification by causing grain rearrangement under heat and pressure. Densification improves structure and bulk density. The effect is to minimize internal porosity while improving strength. CPC with high density delivers better anode and metallurgical applications where the thermal resistance is required.
During calcination, you maintain temperatures between 1200 °C to 1500 °C. An accurate control of the temperature of coke transformation is assured without overheating. Incompleteness occurs at lower temperatures and damage to carbon structure at excessive heat. By designing stable parameters, the product quality is predictable over large industrial batches.
You cool the coke down after calcination using ways such as controlled cooling of the coke by inert gas cooling or by means of water sprays. Thereby the thermal cracking occurs gradually and the mechanical properties are preserved. Fractures can be caused by rapid cooling and coke strength is reduced. The final carbon structure is controlled cooled.
