Carbon Anode Scrap

Carbon Anode Scrap is also known as Carbon Blocks, Anode Butts, Spent Anode or Anode Scrap. It is the residue of the prebaked anode carbon block which is used in the electrolytic tank. Reacting with electrolyte over a long period of time, it has high element of electrolyte including aluminium, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, fluorine, lithium etc. Carbon Anode scrap is high in calorific value and low in the moisture, the calorie of 1 ton anode scrap is equivalent to that of 1.5 ton metallurgical coke or foundry coke.

Replacing virgin materials: After being crushed and cleaned, carbon anode scrap still primarily consists of high-quality carbon (derived from petroleum coke and coal tar coke). This material can be used as aggregate to directly replace some of the expensive fresh petroleum coke used in the production of new prebaked anodes.

Reducing asphalt usage: Scrap particles often contain some carbonized asphalt residue on their surface, which provides a certain degree of adhesiveness. Including scrap in the formulation can slightly reduce the amount of new binder asphalt used.

Reducing production costs: Petroleum coke and asphalt are the primary costs associated with producing new anodes. Recycling scrap can significantly reduce the raw material cost per ton of new anodes, thereby improving the economic efficiency of overall electrolytic aluminum production.

Improving particle size distribution: The hardness and size distribution of scrap particles help optimize the particle size distribution of the anode raw materials, resulting in a denser mixture and higher mold density for the green anodes.

Reducing roasting energy consumption: Since scrap has already been "clinkered" through the high-temperature electrolysis process, it no longer undergoes volatilization and desorption in the roaster, thus slightly reducing fuel consumption during the roasting process.

Improving anode conductivity: Waste particles undergo high-temperature treatment, resulting in a higher degree of graphitization than fresh coke and better conductivity. Adding an appropriate amount can slightly improve the conductivity of new anodes.

Recycling resources: It transforms industrial waste into raw materials, exemplifying the "waste-to-treasure" approach. This perfectly aligns with the principles of the circular economy and significantly reduces solid waste generation.

Avoiding fluoride contamination: The greatest environmental risk of carbon anode waste is the concentration of soluble fluorides. If stored in open-air storage, rainwater leaches these fluorides, seriously contaminating soil and groundwater. Returning these fluorides to the production system effectively traps the fluorides within the industrial process, avoiding significant environmental harm.

Reducing carbon emissions: By reducing the consumption of fresh petroleum coke (a byproduct of oil refining), it indirectly reduces the carbon emissions associated with petroleum coke production. Furthermore, recycling itself requires less energy than processing waste or producing new materials.

Type of Carbon Anode Scrap

Spent anodes (anode scrap)

Scrap anodes are discarded during carbon product production due to cosmetic defects (such as cracks, roughness, or warping) or uncontrolled process parameters (such as kneading temperature or vibration molding pressure).

Spent carbon blocks (anode scrap)

The remaining portion of a prebaked anode after electrolysis in an electrolytic cell. These blocks are removed when their thickness drops to approximately 20 cm to prevent them from becoming unremovable.

Anode carbon slag (anode carbon pellets)

The carbon particles that do not participate in the aluminum electrolysis reaction and absorb electrolyte, also known as carbon slag or spent slag.

Applications of Carbon Anode Scrap

Fuel Industry
Carbon and electrode paste plants use it as a raw material, or in copper and aluminum smelting processes, replacing some metallurgical coke and reducing production costs.

Anode Production Ingredients
Increasing the amount of hard anode butts can reduce air permeability and improve anode thermal shock resistance. Soft anode butts are generally not used in production due to their high porosity.

Electrode Paste Raw Materials
Using anode butt carbon blocks instead of anthracite, we develop a sealed electrode paste with high strength and excellent thermal shock resistance to meet the needs of expanding the capacity of large-scale submerged arc furnaces and reducing energy consumption.

The Role of Carbon Anodes in Aluminum Electrolysis

Process: Aluminum is industrially produced from aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) through electrolysis. This reaction takes place in a large electrolytic cell (called an "electrolytic cell" or "aluminum electrolytic cell").

Core Components: The electrolytic cell has two electrodes:
Cathode: The bottom of the cell, used to drain the molten aluminum.
Anode: Suspended in the cell and immersed in the molten cryolite electrolyte. This anode is a carbon anode.

Function of the Anode: When electricity is applied, the carbon anode undergoes an electrochemical reaction with the molten aluminum oxide. On the one hand, it acts as a conductor, conducting the strong current into the electrolytic system; on the other hand, it participates in the reaction as a reducing agent and is consumed.

The main chemical reaction is: 2Al₂O₃ + 3C → 4Al + 3CO₂
As you can see, carbon (C) originates from the anode and combines with oxygen to form carbon dioxide (CO₂), resulting in the anode being continuously "burned" and consumed.

The generation process of carbon anode waste

Carbon anodes are not completely consumed all at once. They are typically installed in the electrolytic cell in large blocks (prebaked anode blocks).

New Anodes: Newly replaced anode blocks are thick and intact.

Consumption Process: Under the high-temperature electrolysis environment (approximately 960°C), the bottom and air-contacted portion of the anode continuously undergoes oxidation reactions with oxygen, participating in electrochemical reactions and gradually becoming thinner and breaking.

Node Replacement: When the anode is consumed to the point where only a small portion of the top portion remains (usually only the portion where the "anode steel claw" is embedded and the guide rod), its resistance increases, and electrolysis efficiency decreases. The anode must be removed from the electrolytic cell and replaced with a new one.

Waste Formation: This remaining, unusable piece of carbon material is called **carbon anode scrapor anode butts.
