Metallurgical Coke is a solid carbonaceous material produced by high-temperature carbonization of bituminous coal at 950-1050ºC under air-isolated conditions. It is silver-gray, hard and porous. Its core application is serving as the heat source, reducing agent and burden column framework for blast furnace ironmaking.
1. Basic Properties
Appearance: Silver-gray / dark gray lumpy solid with metallic luster, hard texture and porous structure.
Proximate Analysis Composition:
Fixed carbon: 80%-89%, ash content: 10%-18%, volatile matter: 1%-3%.
Elemental composition is dominated by carbon (92%-96%), with trace amounts of hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorus.
Key Indicators for High-Quality Metallurgical Coke:
Three highs & two lows - high fixed carbon (≥85%), high mechanical strength, high abrasion resistance; low ash content (≤12.5%), low sulfur content (≤0.7%).
Physical Properties:
True density: 1.8-1.95 g/cm³;
Ignition temperature: 450-650ºC;
Calorific value: about 6300-7500 kcal/kg.

2. Production Process
Raw Materials: Strongly caking bituminous coal (coking coal, fat coal, etc.).
It consumes approximately 1.3 tons of coking blended coal to produce 1 ton of coke.
Process Flow:
Coal washing → Coal blending → Coking (carbonization at 950-1050ºC) → Coke quenching → Recovery of coke oven gas and chemical products.
3. Application
Metallurgical Coke (accounting for over 90%): Used for blast furnace ironmaking and non-ferrous metal smelting, the core industrial coke.
Foundry Coke: Applied in casting industry, featuring large grain size, high fixed carbon and low sulfur content.
Gasification Coke: Used for coal gasification, with good reactivity and high ash melting point.
Calcium Carbide Coke: For calcium carbide production, requiring high fixed carbon content.
